The annual meeting was held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge on 23 and 24 March.
PROGRAMME
Friday 23 March
2.15pm Committee Meeting
4pm Business Meeting
4.30pm Emma Bovary at the Opera, Dr Peter Bayley (Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge)
Peter Bayley was elected President of the Oliver Prior Society in 1984. He stood down from that role the following year when he became Draper’s Professor of French – a chair founded in 1919 and once held by Oliver Prior himself. Professor Bayley felt strongly that presidency of the Oliver Prior Society should be held by a teaching member of the Cambridge MML Faculty: a tradition the Society still maintains.
7pm Conference Dinner
8.45pm Speech as Action in Racine, Dr Henry Phillips (Emmanuel College, Cambridge)
Saturday 24 March
9.30am Kafka in the Classroom, Dr Michael Minden (Jesus College, Cambridge)
11.30am Spain: Dictatorship to Democracy, Dr Paul Preston (Queen Mary College, London)
Paul Preston was a Reader in History at Queen Mary College when he spoke at the 1984 Oliver Prior Society Annual Meeting. Currently, he is Professor of Contemporary Spanish Studies at the LSE.
